On your 2017 tax return. A check that is mailed to a charity is deductible in the year that it was mailed and postmarked, even if it is received in the next fiscal year. However online or mobile giving donations must be received on or before December 31, 2017.

11. If I make a contribution in early January 2018, can I claim it on my 2017 taxes?

No. Charitable contributions must be claimed in the year in which they are donated.

EXAMPLE: Jessica writes a check to her church on December 31, 2017, and deposits it in the church offering on Sunday, January 7, 2018. In this case, her check is NOT deductible on her 2017 taxes and will not be included on her 2017 Bethel Church Giving Statement. She can claim it in the following year.
